Steelers 2016 Roster, 90 in 90 Days: Ross Cockrell ready to prove to fans he is a starter

Welcome to the next installment of the 90 players in 90 days series. Today, wee back in the secondary featuring one of the favorites to snag the second starting cornerback position.Player: Ross Cockrell Position: CBSchool: DukeOverview: To say the least, giving up the 3rd most passing yards in the NFL leaves the Steelers defense plenty of room to grow in that department. If they are going to improve it stands to reason that they will need better production out of the second CB spot. Last year, the Steelers saw some fairly poor performances out of that position, and it led to Cockrell eventual rise to start in 7 games. During that time he graded high in the Pro Football Focus game charting project, and seemed to do well on tape. His consistency is what jumps out as he able to keep solid positioning and make plays on the ball even against tough receivers http://www.steelerssportinggoods.com/124-Steelers_Tyler_Matakevich_Jersey. At times, he seemed to struggle with the more physical aspects of the game especially in press coverage, and did not always look willing to take on blockers in run support. However, recent reports suggest that he bulked up this offseason in preparation to press more effectively. It remains to be seen if that can help him take the next step as an NFL corner. The simple fact is that while Artie Burns and Senquez Golson are good prospects with solid upside the experience of Ross Cockrell and because he has meaningful http://www.steelerssportinggoods.com/103-Steelers_Robert_Golden_Jersey, productive NFL time under his belt he remains the favorite to land the starting job coming out of training camp. With that being said, the amount of pure talent in this position group is probably higher than it been for awhile, so it should make for some exciting play going forwards.
